What does it involve?

As a participant in the Otago Exercise Programme you will receive regular, personal visits and instruction in your own home.

  • During the year, our provider will visit you six times. The first visit will last for an hour and subsequent visits for 30 minutes.

  • During the first visit the provider will explain the programme, ask you some questions about your health, carry out strength and balance tests and teach you a series of simple exercises.

  • At subsequent visits your provider will check that the exercises are being completed and performed correctly, advance the exercises, recheck the test scores, set goals and help you decide how best to keep fit after the programme ends.

  • Strengthening takes time so it may be some weeks before you notice that your strength is increasing. If you complete the exercises as instructed you will begin to see the results in about 6 to12 weeks.

At key points through the Programme we will tell your GP how you are getting on.

What is expected of you - the participant?

You are expected to take an active
part in the programme.

You will be expected to do your exercises three times a week and do some walking.

The programme will only be successful if you are interested and willing to put aside 20 minutes every second day to do your exercises.

You will need to fill in the calendar which is provided. It will have details of your exercise days and walking days.

If an appointment time is not suitable, please let us know as soon as possible to save your provider from travelling unnecessarily.
